Tempo Training Explained: Slowing Down for Better Results

Two members lifting the same weight for the same reps can get very different results depending on rep speed — tempo is a variable that's rarely discussed but genuinely changes outcomes.
Slower eccentrics increase time under tension
Controlling the lowering phase of a lift, rather than letting it drop quickly, increases the total muscular work done per rep without changing the weight at all.
Tempo is a useful tool when weight can't safely increase
For a member who's plateaued on weight progression, deliberately slowing tempo is a way to keep making the exercise harder without adding load that might not be safe yet.
