RPE and Autoregulation Explained: Training by Feel, Not Just by Numbers
5 August 2026 4 min read
A rigid program that prescribes the exact same weight every week doesn't account for the reality that a member's readiness genuinely varies day to day — RPE (rate of perceived exertion) is a tool for adjusting to that.
RPE rates how hard a set actually felt
Rating a set on a simple effort scale gives a trainer real information about how a member is actually responding, beyond just the weight on the bar.
Autoregulation adjusts the plan based on that feedback
Using RPE to slightly adjust weight or volume session to session — rather than following a fixed number regardless of how a member feels — tends to produce steadier long-term progress with less injury risk.
