Periodization Basics: Why Training Should Change Over Time
5 August 2026 4 min read
A program that stays structurally identical for months, even with progressive overload, eventually plateaus — periodization is the practice of deliberately varying training focus over longer stretches of time.
Different phases emphasize different goals
A period focused on building volume and work capacity, followed by one focused on maximal strength, produces better long-term results than staying in one mode indefinitely.
It doesn't need to be complicated to be effective
Even a simple structure — a few weeks emphasizing higher reps, followed by a few emphasizing heavier, lower reps — captures most of periodization's benefit without requiring an elaborate system.
