Member Growth vs Member Churn: Tracking the Number That Matters
"Total members" is a single number that quietly hides two very different trends underneath it — how many people are joining, and how many are leaving. A gym can look stable on the surface while actually churning through most of its member base every year.
Net growth hides the churn rate
A gym growing by 5 net members a month could be adding 10 and losing 5, or adding 40 and losing 35. The second scenario is a far less stable business, even though the net number looks identical.
New-member trend tells you if marketing and referrals are working
Tracked monthly on its own, new-member count is the cleanest signal of whether your acquisition efforts — referrals, local marketing, word of mouth — are actually working, independent of what's happening with existing members.
Watch the ratio, not just either number alone
A healthy gym doesn't just grow — it grows while keeping churn low relative to new members. Tracking both trends side by side, month over month, catches a churn problem long before it shows up as a shrinking total.
