Handling Medical Emergencies at the Gym: A Staff Framework

5 August 2026 4 min read

The first minute of a medical emergency at a gym is often the most consequential — clear, practiced staff knowledge of what to do in that window matters far more than any policy document read afterward.

Assess, call, and act — in that order

A calm, quick assessment of the situation, followed immediately by calling for emergency help if needed, before attempting any direct intervention, is the basic sequence every staff member should know cold.

Know your AED location and access, specifically

If a gym has an AED, every staff member should know exactly where it is and how to access it quickly — not just that one exists somewhere on the premises.

Document the incident clearly afterward

A clear, factual incident report completed soon after the event protects both the member and the gym, and provides a genuinely accurate record rather than a memory that fades within days.
