Cleaning and Hygiene Protocols: A Simple Standard Members Notice Immediately

5 August 2026 4 min read

Hygiene is one of those things members rarely praise explicitly but notice instantly when it's missing — a gym that smells clean and looks maintained earns quiet trust before a member ever uses a single machine.

Equipment wipe-down should be visible, not assumed

Visibly available sanitizing stations and a clear expectation that members wipe down equipment after use does double duty — it's genuinely more hygienic, and it signals that the gym cares about the detail.

A cleaning schedule should be a real schedule

"We clean regularly" is vague. A specific schedule — floors, locker rooms, high-touch equipment — assigned to specific staff, is what actually gets followed consistently rather than done only when it's obviously needed.

This is one of the lowest-cost, highest-visibility things a gym can get right, and one of the fastest things a new member judges within their first five minutes.
